To boldly go... to Chelmsford.

To boldly go... to Chelmsford.

Jon Joyce24 Feb - 22:09

Written by POTM - Ensign Nemo

Witham 4s went boldly down the A12 to Chelmsford to face a side not a million light years away from them in the league. Chelmsford started strongly with some Enterprising play and attacked the Witham defence at warp speed, scoring early and leaving Witham stunned. Lacking a key member of the defensive bridge crew in Dinky, Witham were slow to engage evasive manoeuvres and conceded a penalty corner, where Chelmsford's forward line declared that resistance was futile and slotted their second away.

Witham rallied at this point under their First Officer's command and dominated play with some logical and dedicated moves from the younger members of the crew. Ensigns Nemo, Oscar, Austin, Josh and Harry made some supporting shuttle runs, serving the trusty Lieutenants providing a defence now as solid as a Klingon's forehead. Sadly, they were unable to breach the final frontier and score although the mid-field and forward line created some excellent chances: phasers however remained on stun and Witham was then unable to avoid the killing blow of Chelmsford's third goal.

As time dwindled and the opportunity to slingshot round the sun to turn back time disappeared, Witham approached the remaining minutes with a determination most usually seen when attempting the Kobayashi Maru simulation. A no-win situation it may have become but Witham still found one photon torpedo left in their arsenal, and Commander Richard, dragged himself out of the medical bay to use that to great effect at a penalty corner, claiming one back for the Witham crew.

With five minutes remaining, Chelmsford's senior attacker encroached on the neutral zone of a clear aerial receiver for the last time and received a green card. Witham's crew made a last-ditch attempt to neutralise the score but with their battle bridge now destroyed, they couldn't capitalise. Despite the loss, their the effort was 'positronically' immense and the crew should remember that it is possible to commit no errors and still lose; that is not weakness, it is life.
