Witham travelled into hostile territory this weekend, stepping into an arena that felt more like the Hellmouth than a hockey pitch. Awaiting them was a relentless Maldon side, who played the role of a well-organised vampire horde, pressing from the first whistle and forcing Witham onto the defensive early on.
Much like a surprise demon attack, Maldon struck after just two minutes and sustained that pressure for the next 20. Despite several heroic interventions from the Witham goalkeeper — channeling the bravery of Buffy Summers herself — the hosts broke through again, needing no invitation. Just before the half-time bell rang across Sunnydale, Maldon landed another blow, doubling their lead and sending Witham into the break facing a daunting battle. There were moments where it felt like the Powers That Be really weren’t on Witham’s side and the demon god Glory was representing the opposition. A couple of injuries meant changes in positioning on the pitch and Witham’s two subs were worked hard.
Emerging for the second half with renewed determination, Witham tried to rally like the Scooby Gang, pushing higher up the pitch and showing greater energy in search of a way back into the fight. However, Maldon proved ruthless, with discipline reminiscent of The Initiative, striking again early in the half with a swift counterattack. Just like Spike, their centre forward hung around the goal like an annoying bad penny and showed up too many times, with devilishly disguised flicks past Jon.
In an effort that would have made Giles clean his glasses with pride, Witham kept battling bravely, showing resilience and work rate across the pitch. There was a glimmer of hope as Maldon’s centre mid threw a teenage Dawn-esque hissy fit and launched his stick across the pitch to intercept a pass. He was quite deservedly given 5 minutes in detention to consider his actions and Witham gathered the all the gang for the final Big Bad. Yet Maldon continued to capitalise on their chances, adding two further goals as the match wore on, sealing a decisive 5–0 result.
Even in defeat, there were glimpses of grit from Witham — moments of disciplined defending and determined effort that would make even The Council proud. The team will now return to regroup, sharpen their stakes, and prepare for the next encounter.
