Witham Ladies 1st XI vs Southend 2s
Date: Saturday 27th September 2025
Venue: Witham
Result: Witham Ladies 1st XI 6 – 1 Southend 2s
Witham Ladies 1st XI delivered a sizzling performance on a sunny Saturday afternoon, dispatching Southend 2s with a confident 6–1 victory in their second league game of the season. Despite half the squad off galavanting (presumably somewhere less sweaty), the team pulled together with grit, flair, and a healthy dose of chaos.
A huge shoutout to our fabulous reinforcements from the 2s — Amelia Tyson, Sue Rayner, Sarah Van Stock, and Maya Moon — who stepped up and slotted in seamlessly. The squad depth is real, and so is the gratitude.
Coach Kieron Parkes delivered a rousing halftime team talk that clearly hit the mark — three goals followed in the second half.
Goals Galore
6’ – A textbook short corner routine saw Chloe Campbell feed Eve Spooner, who deflected the ball past the keeper with surgical precision.
10’ – Sarah O’Shea’s shot may have lacked power, but it had purpose. With Hannah Cagney shielding it from Southend sticks, the ball trickled over the line in slow motion glory.
14’ – Holly Cagney channeled her inner assassin, taking on the keeper one-on-one and slotting the ball home with ice-cold composure.
32’ – Chloe Campbell unleashed a straight strike from a penalty corner that left the defence rooted.
44’ – Chloe again, this time from open play, rocketed a shot from the edge of the D that could’ve taken paint off the backboard.
60’ – After a Southend foot on the line, Witham were awarded a penalty flick. Sarah O’Shea stepped up and coolly lifted the ball into the bottom left corner — a sweet moment against her former club.
Southend managed a consolation goal in the 55th minute, but it was little more than a footnote in Witham’s dominant display.
Midfield Mayhem & Defensive Steel
Player of the Match went to Holly Cagney, whose relentless running in midfield made her look like she’d been cloned. Her link-up play with mum Hannah Cagney down the right was a masterclass in one-twos and family chemistry.
At the back, Moose (Michelle Fussell) was solid in goal, supported by a defensive unit that refused to be rattled. Special mention to Chloe Peppiatt-Johnson, Sue Rayner, Amelia Tyson, Jess Larbalestier and Emma Saunders for keeping Southend’s chances to a minimum — and for surviving a few spicy moments with chatty opposition players.
Comedy Corner
Muppet of the Match: Eve Spooner, for forgetting her stick before the game and then leaving it on the pitch after. A full-circle moment.
Hannah Cagney missed two sitters and blamed it on a two-week-old neck injury, despite Moose offering a neck support pre-match.
Captain’s Words
“Smashing game today ladies! Fab work and effort from everybody, super proud captain”
— Chloe Campbell
