Witham Ladies 1st XI put in a determined and hard‑fought performance away at Basildon Sporting Village, but despite the effort across the pitch, came away with a narrow 2–1 loss. The team worked relentlessly for each other and produced plenty of quality moments, but were ultimately unlucky not to take something from the game.
Basildon started strongly, applying pressure that forced Moose into several excellent saves. She reacted brilliantly to keep the scoreline down and continued to be a calm, commanding presence at the back. Witham grew into the match, moving the ball well through midfield and showing confidence despite the physicality of the opposition.
The equaliser came through a moment of class and persistence. Amy, marked by a wall of three defenders for most of the match, broke free with a trademark driving run into the D. Luce, who had been everywhere all game — drifting between midfield and attack, producing beautiful V‑drags and constantly unsettling Basildon — threaded the perfect ball through for Amy to finish with precision.
In defence, Witham were resolute. Leanne, also known as Mrs Tickle for her super extendy arms, reached into tackles that most players wouldn’t get near, cleanly stealing possession time after time. Chloe PJ, who earned Player of the Match, was once again exceptional — reading the game superbly, stepping forward with confidence, and being a commanding, calming force at the back. Natasha held her own brilliantly at left wing‑back, battling through strong physical pressure, while Jess made dangerous runs down the right, repeatedly causing Basildon problems. Amelia added strength with excellent stick blocks and clever reading of the game, helping shut down key attacks.
The midfield worked tirelessly, intercepting passes and keeping possession moving. Eve held the centre superbly, bouncing the ball back to defence to create space and recycling possession intelligently. Holly was everywhere, pressing hard, making sharp jab tackles, and driving the team forward with energy. Sarah O’Shea had her memorable slow‑motion fall moment in the middle of the pitch — earning Muppet of the Match — but immediately got back up and continued causing issues for the Basildon midfield.
Up front, Witham kept pushing for another goal. Sarah Van Stolk made impressive runs along the right of the forward line and had several promising chances. Adriana linked beautifully with Amy, the pair working quick one‑twos to break through the Basildon defence and create openings that were inches from becoming goals.
Despite all the effort and mounting pressure in the final stages, Witham were just unlucky not to find the equaliser. The fight and teamwork were unquestionable, and the squad came off proud of the performance — a display full of work rate, structure, and togetherness that deserved more.
